Christmas truce

As Christmas was approaching, in 1914, the  Germans started to sing christmas Carols e.g (Silent night, O christmas tree). They also started to put up Christmas trees. To begin with the British thought it was some sort of trick. The British started singing Silent night, O Christmas tree. One of the men on the British side started to climb up the ladder to meet the Germans which were getting ready to fire . When they saw him with his hands up in the air they relaxed. Then a man from the German side, with his hands up, started climbing up the ladder.

All of the people in the trenches started coming up. They greeted each other by swapping gifts like chocolate, fags and pictures of family/friends. After a few minutes, a football game was started which the Germans won. As the day ended, they thought they would meet up again but the men in charge made sure it didn't happen again. During the next few days the bombing was intensified and there was no longer an opportunity to meet again.
