World War I
ETHAN DICKINSON AND WILLIAM MEARS

Joining the Army
In 1914, Britain was the only powerful country still relying on people to join without persuasion. This was called volunteering.
Later on in the war, troop numbers were down and the government made the country conscript and join the army. They sometimes would post a letter to be enlisted to fight. If you didn't join the army, if you were aged 18-50 and were well, when you were walking in public some people would stick a white feather on you to show that you are a coward and that you didn't respect your country. Also you may even go to prison for 3 years. This helped the army to recover after costly battles in the summer of 1916.
